Why Wont I Tell You What Religion I Belong to?
Why Won’t I Tell You My Religious Affiliation?
Primitive Christianity centers on investigating what the earliest disciples of Jesus believed and practiced. Today there are thousands of different religious denominations that claim to adhere to the teachings of Jesus, yet their only common bond is lack of unity.
The primitive Christian Paul wrote at 1 Corinthians 1:10: Now I exhort YOU, brothers, through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ that YOU should all speak in agreement, and that there should not be divisions among YOU, but that YOU may be fitly united in the same mind and in the same line of thought.
When a person mentions his/her religious affiliation, then a religious label is placed on him/her and anything stated thereafter may be accepted or rejected based on that label. The religious mainstream is primarily responsible for this situation that facilitates a closed-mind attitude toward religious instruction. Today people speak openly about sex and politics, but even the most liberal individuals who pride themselves in being open-minded consider religion taboo.
I do have my religious affiliation, and most individuals will come to their own conclusion as to what that theological organization is. Because it would stifle constructive dialogue, I won’t mention mine. Most times individuals will completely change the course of a conversation once they discovered what “religion” one belongs to.
The world we live in today that loves to attack the messenger, especially if he/she is clearing up any misconceptions of common viewpoints. My advice to you who love to talk about religion and are interrupted by: “What religion do you belong to?” Tell them, “I’d be more than happy to answer that question once we cover this topic to your satisfaction.”
